100 Kwentong Peyups By Guillermo "Bill" Ibanez, BFA'63 Every UP alumnus wants to believe that he is an embodiment of the State University. Perhaps in spirit, perhaps in character. However, I can proudly lay claim to the singular distinction of literally embodying UP when I portrayed the Oblation on top of a float, not just once, but twice--all in full view of thousands of people gathered at the Luneta. The first time was during the last July 4th celebration of Phlippine independence Day, while the second time was during the first June 12th celebration. Interestingly, retired Gen. Douglas McArthur was seated in the stands with then President Diosdado Macapagal during one of the two occasions. Both must have marveled at how life-like the statue was on UP's float! To the naked eye, the naked figure modestly shielded by a fig leaf was truly made of bronze. The illusion that I was genuinely a piece of statuary was achieved through a combination of brown powder, bronze water paint ad the artistry of future National Artist for Visual Arts Bencab, who was, even then, the primus inter pares among our Fine Arts classmates. To the oft-asked question of why I dared to bare it all in public, my reply has always been, "Why not?" It is this UP spirit of daring and bold adventure that I strive to maintain in other aspects of my life, and to embody, up to now, as an old alumnus. Tinakot ni Monsod! By Manuel G. Aquino, BSEcon'83 I never really took my Econ seriously as I was hedonistically addicted to singing and making tambay sa College of Music. As a result, I constantly got singkos and eventually became a candidate for "DQ" (disqualification--do they still call it this?). Anyway, I didn't know at the time that then Dean of the School of Economics Solita Monsod was monitoring the grades and performance of the batch under her regime. She had me called into her office. I remember the day so well as I walked in and came face-to-face with this great, charismatic lady, in her trademark golf culottes and a golf iron resting on her right shoulder like an M-16. In her gravelly, smoke-scarred voice, she immediately came to the point and forcefully thundered, "Iho! No student in my administration as dean has ever been disqualified…and I am not going to start with you! If you do not get your grades up by next sem, I will personally transfer you to the School of Home Economics!" By the following semester, I had managed to get onto the Dean's List. The sunken condoms in the Sunken Garden By Manuel G. Aquino Who could ever forget the days of ROTC when our Saturdays were spoiled by the compulsory trips to the Sunken Garden where the four-hour drills took place under the unforgiving sun and under the harsh yet comical barking orders of officers who relished their sadistic roles? Who could ever forget the routine roll calls at the start where we would giggle as family names like "Andutan," "Adobo," were shouted out and made us think of our Spanish frailes running out of family names to assign to our indio great-granddads. (Either that or these were their favorite past-times, eh?) But I digress too much. One Saturday, after our troop or platoon had finished their hot Coke and banancue (the unchanging merienda fare), I was ordered to run to the officers' station to fetch some papers. I ran across the Sunken Garden and had to pass through the Lagoon, which had a thick old log serving as a bridge (I don't know if it's still there). Picture big, flabby, chunky thighs running and toptoeing across the periloudly shaky log of the Lagoon. I slipped and fell into this black watery muck. I can still remember the splash and the immediate fear of tetanus and germs. The Lagoon was not deep. I managed to climb out and take along with me an interesting collection of trash and used condoms dangling on my sleeves, clining to my pants, and hanging on my shoulders. The officers looked at me and, surprisingly, they did not laugh. All they did was to order me to sit on the steps of the Arts and Sciences building and dry out there under the sun! Poor little scared traumatized me…I obediently followed and spent the next two hours baking my wet-condom-clad self under the scorching steps of the AS.
